First, he smashed a beer bottle over his victim's head.
He then used the bottle with the broken glass to cut the victim's arm.
Lee Poh Heng knew how to add insult to injury when he made a police report against the victim, claiming the man was from a gang who terrified him.
Yesterday, Lee, 48, a construction site project manager, was jailed six weeks for voluntarily causing hurt to Mr Surendran Rajoo, 37, on Feb 26 last year.
Court papers said the two men, who did not know each other, were drinking with their own friends at a coffee shop at Block 261, Serangoon Central Drive at about 1.30am that day.
They spoke to each other, but then, for unknown reasons, their conversation turned into an argument.
Mr Surendran, who was a rigger at Jurong Port, then told Lee, in Hokkien, to shut up and he returned to his seat.
BICKER
The two men continued bickering at a distance.
That was when Lee grabbed an empty beer bottle and walked towards Mr Surendran.
He hit Mr Surendran's head with the beer bottle, which broke.
Lee also used the broken beer bottle to graze the man's left arm.
After the attack, Lee left the coffee shop and made a police report.
Mr Surendran sought treatment at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
A medical report said he suffered cuts on his scalp, with broken glass embedded in his flesh, wounds on his left forearm and right shoulder, and an abrasion on his neck.
He was warded for a day and given 30 days' medical leave.
Yesterday, Lee was jailed for voluntarily causing hurt, having earlier pleaded guilty to it.
The maximum punishment for the charge is two years' jail and a $5,000 fine.
